Whether it’s for a weekend or a week, women are breaking away from the hectic pace of their jobs and families and recharging their batteries with golf-centered girlfriends getaways.

For those planning girlfriends getaways that revolve around great golf courses, fantastic food and entertainment, and abundant shopping opportunities, the Grand Strand area of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is the perfect location.

There are many women-friendly courses in Myrtle Beach, but if you’re looking for the total getaway package, plan your girlfriends getaways with the Glens Golf Group. The Glens Golf Director can customize a stay-and-play package that offers great discounts on play at all Glens courses, free range balls, complimentary breakfast and discounted replays.

The Village at the Glens is the ideal home away from home for enjoying the scenic and women-friendly Glens courses — Heather Glen, Glen Dornoch, Possum Trot and Shaftesbury Glen. The Village has an on-site putting green and a practice facility nearby at Heather Glen. And after a day of golf, there’s nothing more refreshing than a dip in the on-site pool.

Another great place to stay at the Glens is Shaftesbury Suites. Imagine yourself waking up to a beautiful sunrise over the golf course and then walking out the front door to begin a round of golf at Shaftesbury Glen. Now that’s a golfers dream come true.

When planning your trip to Myrtle Beach, tee times can be arranged that will fit in with lots of Myrtle Beach activities during your fun-filled vacation in South Carolina. The Glens Golf Group has an excellent stable of courses to choose from – all women-friendly with gorgeous scenery. There’s Heather Glen, 27 holes showcasing the natural beauty of the land with ever-changing elevations, gigantic 100-year-old pines, colorful dogwoods, heather-laced dunes and winding streams, and Glen Dornoch with its panoramic views of the Intracoastal Waterway, fairways that roll naturally over the coastal terrain, and 18 holes that are enhanced by spectacular marsh and river views. Golf Digest named it one of the top courses for women. There is also Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club which runs along South Carolina’s beautiful Waccamaw River. Possum Trot is known as the “Friendliest Course On The Beach.” It has spacious fairways and awesome par 5′s, as well as immaculately manicured greens and spectacular flower displays.

While you’re here for your golf vacation, take advantage of all there is to do in Myrtle Beach. Of course, you won’t want to miss out on Myrtle Beach’s most popular attraction —- the beach. Enjoy an afternoon of soaking up the sun or playing in the surf before heading out for an evening of dining and Myrtle Beach nightlife.

There are many attractions in Myrtle Beach, but be sure to make time for a visit to La Belle Amie Vineyard, an operating vineyard that features concerts and other events. It’s just minutes away in Little River. Spend an afternoon sampling wines, relaxing in a comfortable lawn chair, and enjoy music during a Vineyard festival.

If you’re looking for other things to do in Myrtle Beach — think shopping. The Grand Strand area has everything from outlet malls to upscale shopping. Bargain hunters will love the flea markets around the area and two Tanger Outlet Centers. Other shopping options include the Market Common, Broadway at the Beach, and Barefoot Landing.

No girls getaway trip to Myrtle Beach would be complete without a visit to Lori’s Golf Shop. This unique golf shop is located nearby in Calabash, North Carolina, just a few minutes drive from the Village at the Glens. From clubs, bags and golf equipment to an extensive line of golf apparel in a variety of sizes that fit anyone from the petite to the full-figured lady, this is a “must visit” for any true woman golfer.

Comfortable accommodations, the beach, shopping, dining, and nightlife — the makings for fun-filled girlfriends getaways. So ladies, now’s the time to start planning a trip to Myrtle Beach and the Glens.

May is finally here. If you haven’t already been to the Glens golf courses for your spring golf vacation, there’s good news. You can still book — and you can even save some cash.

Late May and early June are great times for a Myrtle Beach golf vacation. A Glens Golf Group package can cost as much as a hundred dollars less than earlier in the spring when demand is high. So why not let the Glens Golf Group help you create a vacation golf package that provides you with top notch accommodations and premium golf?

Popular golf packages are based on foursomes, but Glens is happy to accommodate groups of any size. Here’s a look at two popular packages.

The Glens 4-Day/3-Night Package offers free pre-booked afternoon replays at each course when you book at least three rounds of golf at Heather Glen, Shaftesbury Glen and Possum Trot. It also includes three nights in a two-bedroom villa at the Village at the Glens, as well as cart fees and range balls at each golf course.

The Ultimate Glens Stay and Play Package offers a free morning round at Possum Trot as well as free pre-booked afternoon replays at each of the four courses when you book at least three rounds of golf at Heather Glen, Glen Dornoch and Shaftesbury Glen. It includes four nights in a two-bedroom villa at Village at the Glens, as well as cart fees and range balls at each golf course.

Accommodations at the Village at the Glens have everything a golfer could want. There’s an onsite putting green and pool facility, and just down the road is the complete practice facility of Heather Glen with driving range, putting green, and chipping/bunker area. And, if you’re looking for breakfast, lunch or some cocktails at the end of round, check out the Heather Glen pub.

While you’re here for your Myrtle Beach golf vacation, take advantage of all there is to do in the area. The Village at the Glens is close enough to the excitement of Myrtle Beach, with its numerous restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, yet still far enough away to provide the peace and quiet you’ll want during your vacation. It’s the best of both worlds. And, if flying in to the area, the Glens courses are just a short drive from the Myrtle Beach and Wilmington airports. That means more time for you to get out on the golf course. The folks at the Glens will be happy to set up those extra rounds at a great price.

These rates are so good that when school is out, you might even want to bring the family down for a little golf vacation. Kids play free all summer long. So now is the time to start planning a trip with your buddies, and with all the money you save, start planning your return visit to the Glens.

Spring is the perfect time for golfers to get a fresh start on their games. It’s a great time to reconfirm that your golf clubs are right for you by getting a professional club fitting. As the weather warms up, it’s also a good time to visit your favorite instructor for refresher golf lessons. In addition, here are three golf tips to help get your game up and running this spring:

Inspect each golf club. Seems like a no-brainer, but so often we don’t take the time to do it. If you’re happy with your golf clubs or a new set isn’t in the budget, there are simple things you can do to ensure your existing equipment is in the best shape. For starters, it’s time for spring cleaning — not only does this apply to the house or garage, but it applies to your golf clubs as well. A little soap, water, elbow grease, and even an old toothbrush (great for removing dirt and debris from the grooves) can do wonders. Now that you know what you are dealing with, let the assessment begin. Check out your grips. Have they seen better days? Maybe it’s time for a new set. New grips can make an older golf club feel brand new. You could also take your clubs to a pro to double-check your loft and lie, which will have a major effect on your golf swing. A little golf club maintenance can make a world of difference.

Stretch. Admit it. We all tend to be armchair athletes in the winter. Spring is here and now you’re ready to head for the golf courses in Myrtle Beach. Before you take that first golf swing, loosen up those muscles. Here are two easy stretching exercises: (1) Fold your arms across your chest and then bend over from the waist. As you hold the position, you will feel your arms, head and chest slowly moving farther downward. This is a great stretch for your legs, hamstrings and back. (2) Hold the golf club with hands wider than shoulders and take it up over the head, arms straight. Lean to the right, taking the golf club as far as you comfortably can, feeling a stretch in the left side of the body. Come back to center and repeat to the left. Repeat 20 times. This is a great stretch and it strengthens the torso as well. There are a lot of other great warm-up stretches out there as well. Always remember to stretch first – your body will thank you for it.

Practice. The short game is likely to need the most attention. There are a variety of drills for better putting and chipping. You’ll find that while golf instructors have different philosophies on this, they all agree that the key is to practice. Fine tuning your short game will really impact your score. So find some golf videos or drills online and get out and practice.

You can get your game off to a really great start during your Myrtle Beach golf vacation by signing up for golf school at the Glens Golf Group’s Simply Great Golf Academy located at Possum Trot. PGA teaching professional Mike Passmore and his team are experts in the golf swing. They’ll show you how to play better golf.

After enjoying the challenge of Glen Dornoch’s first 15 holes, you’re going to face the toughest three closing holes of golf in Myrtle Beach, S.C. As you approach the 16th tee, you might want to take a deep breath and a big bite from an energy bar. Then. . . focus, focus, focus.

Not only are these three final holes tough, but they are framed by incredibly beautiful, panoramic natural views that are extremely distracting — the kinds of views that make a great and memorable golf course vacation. But they are also views that can turn your attention away from the very golf shots you need to make.

Hole 16 at Glen Dornoch is a long par 4 that plays down to the Intracoastal Waterway and the salt marsh. From the tee, you’ll be hitting uphill to the crest of the fairway. If you’re brave enough to take on Glen Dornoch from the blues, that means a 253 yard drive. On your way to the crest, your drive needs to avoid a small pond on the left, as well as fairway bunkers strategically placed on both the left and right.

Hit as close to the bunkers on the right as possible, and you’ll be in the best position to go for the green. Go over the crest and you’ll either have a severe downhill lie or end up in a catch basin bunker midway down the slope. Either way, you’ll need a spectacular shot to reach the green in two from there.

But, let’s say, you’ve landed in the best position.Your next shot needs to carry over a creek to a tongue-like green protected on the right by water, a bunker on each side, and a rear bunker that can keep a long shot from going to a watery grave in the Waterway behind the green. Plan on coming up short and chipping onto the green only as a last resort — the landing area in front of the green is extremely narrow and woods protect it on the left. Par here is a good score no matter what tee you’re hitting from— Black: 431; Blue:413; White: 371; Gold: 348; or Red: 330. It’s the number 2 handicap from all tees except Red where it’s number 4.

Tricky. That’s the best word to describe the beautiful little par 3, number 17 at Glen Dornoch. By its yardage, it seems fairly benign. And it’s only the 16th handicap hole. Piece of cake, right? Don’t let your guard down, because this hole has teeth. You’ll need to pay close attention to the pin placement to score well, and have a strategy before you even put that peg into the ground.

Most of this hole’s tee boxes are set up to force players to maneuver around a huge tree in the marsh in order to reach the green. The green juts out into the marsh so that it’s protected by water on three sides. This is no time for pulled golf shots.

There’s no water on the right side, but there is a huge bunker at the base of a severe hill that is fortified by tall, massive railroad ties. If your golf swing takes you to the right and the ball happens to hit those railroad ties, your shot can ricochet through the green into the marsh.

This is a deep but not wide green, so it’s better to be long than hit your shot to either the left or right. That means focus and precision. If you’re lucky enough, record a three. Even bogey is a good score here. Tees— Black: 212; Blue:182; White: 164; Gold: 115; or Red: 105.

Time to head back to the clubhouse by way of an exciting and intimidating par 4 that’s the number 6 handicap at Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links. This hole requires navigating an expansive marsh, staying out of 17 bunkers (10 of which guard the green) and avoiding pulling any of your shots into the Waterway.

Play from the Black tees (455 yards ) or the Blues (427) and you are faced with a tee shot that must carry more than 225 yards over water and marsh to land safely on the left side of the fairway. Too far left and you’re in a massive bunker that skims the fairway edge next to the Waterway. But execute this shot well and you’re rewarded with a short iron to the green.

Drive from the Whites (367 yards), Golds (350) or Reds (300) and you have more choices in landing areas. You can play it safe up the right side fairway, which will leave you with a very long second shot over narrow wetlands to the green. Or you can choose to soar over those wetlands from the tee, leaving an iron or hybrid to the green.

And what a green. It sits at the end of a fairway that doglegs left toward the Waterway. Wrapped from the left front to its left rear by five bunkers, it is protected on the right by five more bunkers ready to catch the errant shot. Some of these are small pot bunkers that make golf shots out of them both delicate and challenging.

Now that you know the best ways to get from tee to green on these three dramatic holes at Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links, it’s up to you to know how to putt when you reach the greens.

Putt well and remember these golf tips, and you could be telling your buddies in the clubhouse how you conquered the three toughest closing holes on the Grand Strand.

If you’re on a stay and play golf package at the Village of the Glens, you can have a cookout right outside the door of your Myrtle Beach golf condo.

Maybe you enjoy firing up an outdoor grill and preparing the perfect steak for your buddies. Or maybe you’d just like to have a night of good food without high restaurant prices. A golf and grill party outside your Myrtle Beach golf condo at Village at the Glens will save your group money. The good folks at the Village at the Glens provide outdoor grills adjacent to their massive practice putting green, centrally located at the Village. So, the guys on your golf vacation can take turns grilling, pop some brews, and enjoy some putting contests while the meat is cooking.

Haven’t a clue where to shop for a great steak? No worries because the Village at the Glens is located close to both a major grocery store and a butcher shop that the locals rave about.

A Food Lion is less than a minute away from Village at the Glens off of Highway 17. While you’re buying meat, you can also pick up other supplies like beer and potatoes there.

If you’re feeling a little gourmet — or you’ve never tasted the divine difference in a steak from a great butcher shop — you might want to make that part of your golf trip experience. We recommend heading over to Randy’s which is just about 18 holes away from the Village beach golf resort. Locals say the rib eye is to die for.

After your day on the links and your succulent, perfectly prepared steak, we’re betting your score won’t be the only thing you’ll be telling the folks back home about.

Randy’s Meat Center
5850 Ocean Highway West
Ocean Isle Beach, NC
(910) 287-6999

Directions from Village at the Glens (About 10 minutes): Start out going northeast on Scotch Broom Drive toward Heather Glen Way. Turn right onto Heather Glen Way. Turn left onto US-17 North (crossing into North Carolina). Make a U-turn onto Ocean Hwy West/US-17 South. Randy’s Meat Center will be on the left.

While you’re daydreaming about a Myrtle Beach golf condo overlooking Heather Glen Golf Links, we’ve been thinking of how you can shave time off your trip to the Village at the Glens, located in Little River, just north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Most golfers from the D. C. area get to their beach golf vacation by car and there are several routes to Myrtle Beach from Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. Some golfers head down 95 to just over South of the Border, link to 501 and shoot into the heart of Myrtle Beach. Others prefer to veer off 95 at Dillon, S.C. and head down Rt 9 to North Myrtle Beach. Others get off 95 at I-40 head to Wilmington, N.C. and then drive south down Highway 17.

Here are our recommendations for spending less time on the road and more time enjoying your stay in Myrtle Beach.

From Northern Virginia to Village at the Glens — Travel Time: Just under 6 and a half hours: Take the I-95 S/I-495 West ramp toward VA-241/Richmond. Merge onto Capital Beltway/I-495 Innerloop. Merge onto I-95 South via the exit on the left toward Richmond. Merge onto I-295 South via Exit 84A on the left toward Rocky Mount NC/Richmond Int’l Airport. Merge onto I-95 South via the exit on the left toward I-295 South/Emporia/Rocky Mount NC (crossing into North Carolina). Take the US-264 exit, Exit 119B-A, toward US-117 South/Raleigh/Wilson. Merge onto US-264 East via Exit 119A toward US-117 South/Wilson/Greenville. Merge onto I-795 South via Exit 43C toward US-117/Goldsboro /Kenly. Merge onto US-117 South. US-117 South becomes 1-40-CONN West. I-40-CONN West becomes NC-403 South. Merge onto I-40 East via the ramp on the left toward Wilmington. Merge onto I-140 West/US-17 South via Exit 416A toward Shallotte/Myrtle Beach. Merge onto US-17 South/US-421 South via Exit 14 toward Myrtle Beach/Carolina Beach. Merge onto US-76 West/Andrew Jackson Hwy toward Brunswick County/Beaches. Merge onto US-17 South toward Shallotte/Myrtle Beach (crossing into South Carolina). Go through Little River and the Village at the Glens is on the right.

From Maryland Suburbs To Village At The Glens — Travel Time: Just under 7 hours: Merge onto I-495 West/Capital Beltway/I-495 Outer loop toward N Virginia (crossing into Virginia). Merge onto I-95 South via Exit 57A toward I-95 South/VA-644/Richmond.
From Washington D.C. To Village At The Glens — Travel Time: Just under 7 hours: I-395 South becomes I-95 South. Merge onto I-295 South via Exit 84A on the left toward Rocky Mount NC/Richmond Int’l Airport. Merge onto US-76 West/Andrew Jackson Hwy toward Brunswick County/Beaches. Merge onto US-17 South toward Shallotte/Myrtle Beach (crossing into South Carolina). Go through Little River and the Village at the Glens is on the right.

Know a shorter driving route from any of these locations? Please share it with your fellow golfers in need of a beach golf vacation on the Village at the Glens Facebook page.

Rather fly than drive when you travel to Myrtle Beach?

Two airports have connecting service from the Washington D.C. area to the Grand Strand. Fly into Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) or the Wilmington, NC International Airport (ILM). Either way, you’ll be less than a 50 minute drive to the Village at the Glens in Little River.

Heather Glen Golf Links is the flagship course of the Glens Golf Group, and one of the best golf courses in South Carolina. Here are five things you should know before you play Heather Glen.

Heather Glen was rated #1 in the U.S. when it first opened.

Heather Glen opened in 1987, and Golf Digest named it America’s #1 New Public Golf Course. To receive that rating, golf courses must be both challenging and memorable. Heather Glen lives up to the hype.

If you want to play the Heather Glen that was named America’s #1 New Public Golf Course in 1987, choose the Red Nine and the White Nine.

When Heather Glen was first built 25 years ago, it opened as an 18 hole course. That original 18 is what Golf Digest crowned #1. Today, there are 27 holes. The Blue Nine was added later. If you want the original Heather Glen experience, play the 18 holes that make up the Red Nine and White Nine in that order.

Heather Glen is a Scottish-style links course.

Yes, there are pot bunkers. Some are small, tight and nearly impossible to get out of. Some are cavernous and deep. Some are flanked by heather-like plants and the wispy Scotch Bloom. You’ll get the feeling that you’ve teed it up across the pond.

Heather Glen delivers a roller coaster ride of elevation changes.

Just like the courses of Scotland, Heather Glen has rolling hills. Be prepared for downhill lies and uphill lies that you might not expect to encounter at a beach golf course.

Each of Heather Glen’s nine-hole courses are exceptional, so it’s a great place to play several rounds.

With 3 nines, you can play 6 rounds and never tee it up on the same 18-hole routing twice. You just put different nines together to create new combinations of 18s — Red and White, Red and Blue, White and Red, White and Blue, Blue and Red, Blue and White.

You can tune up your game on any of the four courses the Glens has to offer: Heather Glen, Glen Dornoch, Shaftesbury Glen, and Possum Trot.

Shaftesbury Glen will give you a taste of the style and challenge of Augusta National. In fact, the course was created with Augusta and another famed course, Winged Foot, as inspirations. But it also stands on its own as an exceptional layout. In 2009, the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association named it Course of the Year.

Golf Magazine says Glen Dornoch is one of the Top 20 golf courses in South Carolina and it’s easy to see why. This is a course that’s been skillfully etched into the maritime forest adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway. Designer Clyde Johnston worked without a blueprint to create Glen Dornoch’s 18 uniquely sculpted holes, nestling each hole into the lay of the land, one at a time.

If you wanted to be welcomed like the pros at Augusta National, stop by Possum Trot. A jewel among North Myrtle Beach golf courses, it’s known for its outstanding customer service, and is considered one of the friendliest beach golf courses. The people of Possum Trot have a passion for making golfers feel welcome, and the traditional English design of this course is both beautiful and challenging.

Heather Glen is the flagship of the four Glens Golf Group courses and golf there is an extraordinary blend of Scottish style vistas and southern hospitality. From the clubhouse to intimidating bunkers on the golf course, players get a taste of Scotland amidst colorful dogwoods and heather-laced dunes. Golf World recently voted Heather Glen one of the top 30 courses among South Carolina’s 360 golf courses.

If you’re able to spend a few days on your way to or from The Masters, the Ultimate Glens Stay & Play Package is a great deal. Book at least three rounds of golf at any of the four courses, and you’ll receive a free morning course at Possum Trot plus pre-booked replay rounds at each of the four courses. You’ll stay at Village at the Glens, which features 2- and 3-bedroom split level townhomes with full kitchens and private patios.

If you’re lucky enough to have your own accommodations along the Grand Strand, check out this tee time special — Glens Three Rounds with Free Replays package. Book tee times for at least three rounds of golf at Heather Glen, Possum Trot, or Shaftesbury Glen, and you’ll receive free pre-booked afternoon replays at each of the three courses.

Whether you’re heading to Augusta National, driving home after a great time at The Masters, or simply looking to relax and play some golf, Glens Golf Group courses are a great place to tune up your game.

The month of May is ideal for a Myrtle Beach golf vacation. It’s one of the best times to play golf along the coast.

Right now, there are still prime tee times available at the Glens Golf Group courses for May. But they won’t last long, so you’ll have to move fast.

Why do golfers love golf in Myrtle Beach in May? The courses are emerald green and the average temperature is 83 degrees. For golfers who live in places where there’s more snow than palm trees, Myrtle Beach is the ideal place to jump-start the golf season.

In May, the Glens Golf Group courses — Heather Glen, Glen Dornoch, Shaftesbury Glen and Possum Trot — deliver that jolt of excitement that’s so characteristic of Augusta National at Masters time. The fairways are lush, the putting surfaces smooth and fast, and blooming flowers dazzle the senses with their awesome colors.

Our golf director, Jason Himmelsbach, can help you book your May golf vacation in this sunny southern golf destination known as “America’s Golf Capital.” Jason grew up here and has played every course along Myrtle Beach’s Grand Strand. He’ll make sure your trip is terrific by matching you to courses that fit your game, your scenery preferences, and your budget. He’ll probably even give you some putting tips. And when you talk with Jason, be sure to ask for his recommendations on:

Why you should book replays at the same time you are booking your morning tee times

How you can get your replays for free

Which accommodations will give you the best value and most space for your money

What do you consider when you’re planning an executive retreat? There must be a recreational component, so maybe you’re looking for a place with a championship golf course. Time on the golf course is perfect for team building.

But if you’re working on that annual budget or developing a new sales and marketing strategy, you also need a location that offers seclusion and exclusive accommodations with amenities.

So you need to be off the beaten path — but not so far that you can’t easily have a night out on the town. You might want to consider golf accommodations in Myrtle Beach.

You can find the perfect atmosphere for executive retreats just a few miles outside the excitement of Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Shaftesbury Suites at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club are tucked beside the secluded Waccamaw River, and perched atop the Shaftesbury Glen Manor House. And, these exclusive accommodations are perfect for groups from 16 to 20.

Imagine walking up a private staircase to the second floor of the Manor House where there are just five two-bedroom private suites. Each is decorated in an old-world style, yet has all the modern amenities. Each suite has four full-size beds, a fully equipped kitchen, numerous flat screen TVs, and internet access for when it’s time to get down to business.
