  • How to Play Heather Glen’s 7, 8 and 9 on the White Nine

    Heather Glen Golf

Any golfer who has played the Glens Golf Group’s Heather Glen Golf Course in Little River, SC is aware of the challenge presented by the 3 finishing holes on the Second (or White) nine. The original back nine of the course closes with two different, but challenging par fours, closing with a treat of a par five. Below, Myrtle Beach’s Glens Golf Group outlines how to play Heather Glen’s 7, 8 and 9 on the White Nine:

    How to Play Hole #7

    Par 4

    Measures:

    375 From Blue Tees

    351 From White Tees

    324 From Gold Tees

    282 From Ladies Tees

This hole is deceptive from the tee box. Be aware that the creek which crosses the fairway about 100 yards from the green will come into play with a lengthy tee shot. It is advised to hit a 3 wood or hybrid off the tee to find the center fairway, but beware of the large waste area. The approach shot is uphill, so add a few extra yards. Beware of the bunker guarding the front of the green; there is no trouble long.

    How to Play Hole #8

    Par 4

    Measures:

    409 From Blue Tees

    387 From White Tees

    320 From Gold Tees

    275 From Ladies Tees

You are almost guaranteed to be intimidated standing on the tee box of this unique hole. It is a unique example of a risk-reward first shot. The daunting lake splits the fairway, tempting you to cut the corner or play it safe. The safe shot is to the right, which will leave you an approach of 185-215 to a green guarded by sand. The daring shot to cut the corner brings into play, not just water, but also an immense waste area, which runs some 70 yards up the left edge of the hole. If you decide to be daring, aim your tee shot between the waste area on the left and the grass mounding, which runs up the right of the hole. If you are accurate, this will leave you an approach of 90-125 yards. The green is fairly large, but be aware that there is a large trap on the left side of the green and plenty of room to miss to the right. If you decide to play it safe and go to the right off the tee….well nobody ever does that.

    How to Play Hole #9

    Par 5

    Measures:

    587 From Blue Tees

    558 From White Tees

    514 From Gold Tees

    462 From Ladies Tees

The risk-reward theme continues to the finishing hole of the white nine. One of Myrtle Beach’s best finishing holes, this par five gives all golfers the potential ability to reach the green in two shots. You will want to hit your tee shot down the right center of the fairway. The more you hit it helps, but also keeping the tee shot to the right enables a shorter shot to the green if you go for it on your next shot. The difficulty is the large lake, which runs the course of the entire right side of the hole, forcing a carry to reach the green. A line of pine trees also guards the opposite bank of the lake on the green side. If you go for the green, a fade will be required; be sure to take enough club to miss the large bunker on the right side of the green. If you decide to lay up, then aim to the left of the two small trees in the fairway. Make sure you hit your shot past them, so they do not block your third shot, which should only be in the 100-140 range. The green is large, so pay careful attention to the pin placement.

With these helpful guidelines and a little confidence, hopefully you will be ready to conquer one of Myrtle Beach’s best finishing golf holes.
